The Shaw Brothers premiered their new independent film “Dream Cash” to a sold-out audience in Washington, DC on Saturday August 18th. The film is about a reality TV show that spins out of control as show execs try to boost ratings by promoting drama in the house. The story line is a comedic parody on the reality show/televised entertainment business.

The contestants, from various backgrounds, live in a house together while competing for $100,000. Filled with hilarious outtakes, the drama unfolds as contestants become both friends and enemies. Written by Selton Shaw and starring Langston Shaw, “Dream Cash” highlights the talents of The Shaw Brothers and their company Changing The World Films.

Jessica Ann Mitchell interviewed The Shaw Brothers about the success of their new film.

JAM: Where did you film “Dream Cash”?

Selton Shaw: We filmed in the DMV (DC, Maryland & Virginia) area and shot over the course of 9 days. We actually finished filming in 2011 and then we took time to edit.

JAM: What was your inspiration for the different characters?

Selton Shaw: The characters are based on different types of people we know and we also wanted characters that would have the audience playing off of assumptions.

Langston Shaw: There were 12 characters originally but we picked 9 out of the 12 to be in the film.

JAM: What type of impact do you think your film will have on the African American community?

Langston Shaw: We wanted viewers to see how people can change their lives. That was one of the themes of the film. We also wanted to use comedy to touch on serious issues like single parent households.

JAM: You touched on stereotypes and issues like skin tone and cultural perceptions. What was your strategy for including this in your film?

Selton Shaw: We wanted people to hear certain things and say, “That’s messed up.” So that these issues stand out.
